Biographical/Historical Note

Doris Martin Gabbard Michael, known as Miz M, (1918-2012) was an artist of different forms. She was an author, poet, musician, and painter. She drew illustrations for the book she wrote called “Sprouts from the Potted Plant.”

Raised in the Little Richmond (formerly Rusk) community of Surry County, she graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1935 at Dobson, North Carolina and went on to attend Berea College, Berea, Kentucky where she completed two years study prior to marriage to Taylor Gabbard.

Completing her last two years of her chosen field of music education at Berea College in 1954 with 5 children, she returned to her childhood home in the Little Richmond community, where she taught music and later fourth grade classroom in the Surry Public School System until her retirement.

Doris was an active member in The Salem Fork Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for much of her life. Using some of her many talents, she painted "Christ in the Garden" and "Peace, be still", which hang in the church. Her later efforts have been directed to the thriving pre-school at her church.
