Biographical/Historical Note

The Battle of the Wilderness, fought May 5-6, 1864, was the opening battle of the 1864 Overland Campaign, Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant's push toward the Confederate capitol in Richmond, Virginia. The opposing forces were the Union Army of the Potomac under the command of George G. Meade (supervised by Grant) and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by Robert E. Lee. The battle earned its name due to the scrubby natural terrain, dubbed the Wilderness of Spotsylvania, in which much of the battle was fought. The engagement was a draw, noted for its heavy casualties on both sides and for the surreal images of its aftermath taken by battlefield photographers.
