Biographical/Historical Note

David Mielke was a professor of Leadership and Educational Studies at Appalachian State University. He began his career at Appalachian State University in 1972 as an assistant professor in the Department of Secondary Education. He served on the committee to establish a master's degree in Appalachian Studies and, during the 1975-76 academic year, was director of the "Appalachian Studies for Teachers" project. Mielke retired from Appalachian State University in 1997.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, interviews, class materials, and student papers. Included in the collection are two slide presentations, "Poetry in the Appalachian Way" developed by Sylvia P. Medford and "Appalachia in the Foothills" (alternatively titled "Appalachia: Extension to the Foothills") developed by Everette Johnson, Terry Childers, Sandi Guthrie, and Sam Wilkinson.


This collection is arranged by material type, then mostly alphabetically. Slides are housed separately in Cold Storage.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

This collection was donated in July 1997.

Processing Information

Processed by Cynthia Harbeson, October 2014. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
