Abstract:

The collection contains transcriptions of court records from Ashe County, North Carolina. The records consist predominantly of minutes of court proceedings and decisions from 1806 through 1859. Of particular interest are minutes detailing land transfers and probate courts.

Biographical/Historical Note

Eleanor Baker Reeves (1916-1992) was a historian who focused on the history and genealogy of Ashe County, North Carolina. She earned an Associates Degree from Lees McRae College, a Bachelor of Sciences from Appalachian State University, and took graduate classes from Greensboro College. She was the wife of Jesse A. Reeves (1896-1973) to whom she dedicated her book, A Factual History of Early Ashe County, North Carolina: Its People, Places and Events (1986). Reeves also authored  A Country Doctor Goes Town (1966) and  James Larkin Ballou, Physician and Surgeon (1969).

Scope and Contents

The collection contains typed and handwritten transcripts of Ashe County, North Carolina Court Records. Dates of the records range from 1806 through 1859.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged chronologically by the dates of the transcribed court records. Materials are organized as originally received with papers found within the same envelope occupying the same folder.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.
