Abstract:

The Jesse Amos Hampton Family Photographs collection consists of 294 photographs/items of several identified and unidentified persons/families taken between 1917 and 2004, mostly by Mr. Hampton. Items are in good to fair condition.

Biographical/Historical Note

Jesse Amos Hampton (1886-1927) was born to Jordan and Rachel Coffey Hampton and lived in Watauga County, North Carolina. He married Vertie Harrison and had five daughters.

Scope and Contents

This collection came to us as a large box (294 photos/items) of mostly black & white photographs taken by Jesse Amos Hampton. Some color ones taken in 2004 by Hampton family members along with 3-page letter. two tinplate pictures, and 2 negatives also included. They were sleeved and foldered by family surnames when possible. Note: Jesse Amos Hampson died in 1927.

Arrangement

If the photographs were identified by person, family or group, those were filed together alphabetically. For those unidentified, groupings of anonymous photos were filed together.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Acquisitions Information

This collection was donated to Appalachian State University by Jesse Amos Hampton's grandson, Joseph Elrod of Sparta, North Carolina in 2012.
