Biographical/Historical Note

In 2006, Belk Library Archivists Kathy Staley and Pam Mitchem began the Appalachian State University Memory Project to document the physical, economic, social, administrative, and academic development of Appalachian State University and the local community. In 2015 Professor and Librarian Mary Reichel continued the oral histories in order to expand our knowledge of Appalachian State University through the recollections and memories of people who contributed to the daily life of the university. Information gathered from this project provides a distinct perspective on Appalachian State University's history and highlights individual contributions, including biographical information on the interviewees.

The goal of the project is to create a collection of interviews reflecting university and community culture, similar to the University Archive Oral History Collection, which were interviews conducted and processed by Ruth Currie before the turn of the twenty-first century. The Appalachian State University Memory Project collection is housed in University Archives within Special Collections with the intentions to preserve and celebrate the history of Appalachian State University.

Scope and Contents

The Appalachian State University Memory Project Records contain many distinct oral history interviews. The interviews were taken between 2006 and 2015, with plans for ongoing interviews in years to come. Between 2006-2009, dozens of interviews were conducted, mostly with former students from Appalachian State. In the fall of 2015, fourteen interviews were conducted with alumni. Two of the earlier tapes differ from the standard interview format: the Pat Beaver Lecture at Appalachian State University, which was a lecture given in 2008 by Director of the Center for Appalachian Studies on the Allen High School in Asheville, North Carolina. Included in this were "homecoming" tapes, which were brief interviews conducted in the Belk Library on the morning after the 2008 Homecoming. Along with audiocassette tapes and video cassettes, this collection also contains CD user copies of the original recordings.

Topics covered include: club and sports activities, gender-based rules, relationship between community and college, selective professors, women's roles on campus, Dr. B.B. Dougherty's personality, courtship, dorm life, classes, professional development for instructors, Chapel, buildings and natural surroundings, and faculty-student relationships. National events were highlighted, such as the United States wars, Great Depression, desegregation, the Red Scare, and North Carolina educational trends. Interviewees in this collection include people like Roby Triplett, Stan South, Alice Naylor, Bettie Bond, John Idol, and Ben O'Neal with his memories of Tui St. George Tucker.

Arrangement

This collection was organized into three different series. The first series contains all the audiovisual recordings of the collection. Ordered chronologically by date, the first subseries contains the original tapes of audiovisual recordings. Two tapes at the end of the first subseries are MiniDV video cassettes of the collective Homecoming interviews. The second subseries were the CD copy recordings for some of the interviews. Within Series I, all audiovisual recordings have been digitized along with the newly born-digital recordings, which are all organized in chronological order for the continuation of the Appalachian State University Memory Project. The second series are copies of Deed of Gifts and Release Forms restricted for archival use only. The third series is a collection of transcripts categorized by subseries of major roles in the university and local community: administrators, alumna, community members, and faculty and staff. Within each subseries, the files of interviewees were arranged alphabetically by last name, then chronologically by date for repeating names.

Administrative Information

Access Restrictions

Materials are open for public use and research in the Dougherty Reading Room, Special Collections, Belk Library and Information Commons, with the exception of Series II. This restriction applies to any interviewees that do not have a correctly filled or existing deed of gift, or release form. Therefore, the following interview materials (tapes, digital recordings, and transcripts) are restricted from public access or use: Chad Wilson, Iva Dean Winkler, July 18 recording by Eleanor Cook, March 12 recording by Bettie Bond, and Jim Jones. Other recordings by Eleanor Cook and Bettie Bond are allowed for public access and use. Series II is restricted to archival use only.

Acquisitions Information

The Appalachian Memory Project was created in 2006 with Special Collections archivists Pam Mitchem and Kathy Staley conducting the majority of the interviews. The interviews were donated to Special Collections for public use. Born-digital recordings of interviews are continued in 2015 by Mary Reichel.
