Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about architecture, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Carl Ross Papers is a collection of Carl Ross' academic research and students papers, predominantly from his classes on Appalachian Culture and History. The collection includes extensive materials on the history and architecture of the Brinegar Cabin located on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are also a number of materials related to Dr. Ross' passion for the Civil War and living history programs. A bulk of the collection is centered around Ross' interest in Appalachian Studies and his work in documenting the history of the region.

The Charlotte Ross Papers contains her Appalachian bibliography note card collection as well as personal files relevant to the Appalachian region, American history and folklore studies. Charlotte Ross's Bibliography of Southern Appalachia is a comprehensive bibliography of Appalachian books up to 1976.

This collection consists of a copy of Minnie L. Baugh's "Old Homes and Garden", her memories of Abingdon, Virginia homes and gardens. It was printed in 1939 by her sister, Ethel B. Baugh.

This small collection is a program from the National Register of Historic Places Dedication Ceremony for United States Post Office, Boone, North Carolina on October 26, 1996. Also included is a list of Boone postmasters, and the earlier Councils Store post office (1823), from 1823-1916.

The collection contains four blue prints of Newland Housing for the Elderly, created by Moore Associates P. A., Architects Planners of Asheville, North Carolina. The blue prints include sites plan, O and I Bedroom Room Plans, O and I Bedroom Furnishability Plans, and Building Floor Plans and Elevations.

This collection is a blueprint of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company, Proposed Schemes for the Retiral of Gillies Creek Trestle in Richmond, Virginia, dated February 11, 1933.

Randolph Avenue Overhead (Elkins, WV) Blueprints consist of sixteen 24" x 36" blueprint sheets for the Randolph Avenue Overhead on US 250 and 219 about the Western Maryland Railway in Elkins, West Virginia. This collection illustrates the engineering practices of 1930s West Virginia. Six blueprints show span details, three show pier details while seven show pilings, girders and general plan.
