Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about business, primarily in the Appalachian region. Records and papers relating to various businesses are listed below.  Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. Manuscript Collections

The R.W. Dickenson & Company Ledgers collection is a set of five ledgers from the company located in Bickley Mills, Russell County, Virginia in the last 1800s-early 1900s, which gives daily purchases/payments at the mercantile and an accounts ledger with open accounts.

A bill to Mrs. Rebecca Crabill for items "bot. of John C. Richardson" in Strasburg, Virginia May 15, 1857 constitutes this collection. The items totaling $14.52 were purchased for her daughter.

Reed Island Iron Company Records consists of business ledgers and sales receipts of the Reed Island Iron Company, located in Reed Island, a Pulaski County village on the Norfolk and Western Railway.

This is a one-item collection - a 1862-1863 account ledger of Rev. H. Wipler in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. In it he recorded his collections from the congregation - money, food, sugar, candles, "1 peck of corn for chicken feed".
