Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about business, primarily in the Appalachian region. Records and papers relating to various businesses are listed below.  Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. Manuscript Collections

The Joseph A. Williams Collection contains Williams' cancelled checks and Watauga County Bank correspondence. This collection provides insight into the lifestyle of Appalachian State Teachers College Geology professor Joseph A. Williams as well as Watauga County, North Carolina economy prior and during the Great Depression.

Kelly Bennett (1890-1974) was an active civic leader in the Great Smoky Mountains during the mid-Twentieth Century and served as a local and state elected official for Swain County as well as in many civic organizations such as the Cherokee Historical Association, Inc. and the Western North Carolina Associated Communities. The Kelly Bennett Papers consist of personal correspondence and interests, as well as Bennett's work with various organization dedicated to the development of the parks and roadways of western North Carolina and the Cherokee Historical Association.

Established in 1868, Lamons Wagon Company produced wagons in Greeneville, Tennessee. Mabel M. Lamons auctioned the company real and personal property in 1961. The Lamons Wagon Company Collection consist of one 1961 broadside advertising the sale of the Lamons Wagon Company, two black and white photographs, two advertisement brochures, and three advertisement fliers.

The Loraine Tyrie Papers consists of multiple facsimiles of Confederate paper money and two Bank of Todd checks, circa 1910s-1920.

This collection consists of one Balance Due bill from Love & Love, a building supplies dealer in Red Springs, North Carolina, to J.W. Cates in the amount of $69.23, dated August 31, 1891.

This collection consists of one small (2-1/4x2-1/4 inch square) advertisement for Madam Thompson Perfect Hair Straightner [sic] stating None Genuine Wihtout [sic] This Signature, and it is signed James C. Thompson.
