Manuscript Collections

This Shull's Mill Papers collection contains a variety of information about the mill and its owners. There are over 30 land grants and deeds to members of the Shull family through the 1800's, promissory notes for loans, receipts for payments made on loans, personal and business, a scant amount of Shull family genealogy, and lots of unidentified black and white photos of people and places.

Smyth County, Virginia Lifetime Collection is a compilation of materials related to Smyth County, Virginia. Subject areas include religion, mills and industry, folklife, agriculture, architecture, education, and community events.

The Southern Appalachian Historical Association Records (SAHA) include SAHA's administrative papers, correspondence, brochures, souvenir programs, newspaper and magazine articles, photographs, and films relating to the organization, regional history, and the play, "Horn in the West." Also included are materials relating to the establishment of Daniel Boone Native Gardens, the Daniel Boone, Overmountain, and Buffalo Trails, research into Appalachian people and culture, Daniel Boone and his descendants, other productions at the Powderhorn Theater and Daniel Boone Amphitheater, and materials relating to Hickory Ridge Homestead and the museum's holdings.

This collection consists of World War II letters mostly from Private Terah (Terrah) Harris to his wife Clara. [Terah spelled his name both ways in signatures.] There are a few diaries of Clara's before she married him, and a Lutheran serviceman's book.

The Thomas Lenoir Papers contains photocopies of correspondence, a diary, and other papers relating to Thomas I. Lenoir. Lenoir served in the Company F of the 25th Regiment of the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1862 as Company Captain.

Virgil Sturgill Papers and Audiovisual Materials is a collection of Sturgill's forty-nine daily diaries dating from 1919 to 1951, and audiovisual materials in various formats. A folk song singer and friend of Cratis Williams and Jesse Stuart, Sturgill provides insight into his daily life during the first half of the twentieth century and beliefs, such as service in World War I, domestic life, and his reactions to World War II and the Korean Conflict.

The William P. Wilkin Diary is a copy of a personal (almost) daily diary of Wilkin from March 6 to December 31, 1863, while he served in the Federal United States army during the Civil War. Also included is a letter to Jim Moyer from Richard Keith Irish, who sent the copy to Moyer.
