Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about education, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

This collection consists of two original audio cassettes and the transcription of them, along with a user and an archival CD copy of the cassettes. They are entitled "Ruth Edmisten Lentz on Appalachian Training School" May 9, 1996 and "Ruth Edna Edmisten Lentz Interview" June 14, 1996. The interviews are between Ralph Lentz II and his grandmother, Ruth Edmisten Lentz.

Samuel Horton Collection consists of Horton's photocopied high school and college documents, and correspondence from school and military life.  This collection illustrates the experiences of a Watauga County, North Carolina native with both local and Piedmont education and military life.

The Soul of the People Oral History Project Records is a collection of three original taped oral histories of Watauga County, North Carolina residents, Paula Fink, Nora Percival, and Eleanor Church for an Appalachian History class in 2009.

The St. Paul's Farm and Industrial School Collection consists of photocopied correspondence supporting the development of a vocational settlement school in Andrews for white Cherokee County, North Carolina boys.  No additional information could be located about this school or Malcom Taylor, its founder.

The Storer College Programs contains three printed programs of varying public events at Storer College dating from February 12, 1920 to May 25, 1920.  Storer College was a small historical black college located in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. These programs illustrate the activities available to students, faculty and alumni.

The Teresa Branch Papers consists of Teresa Branch's journal from History 5208, Seminar in Appalachian History in Fall 1985. This journal includes photocopied articles about the Appalachian Region and Branch's reviews of them. This collection primarily contains magazine articles about Watauga County, North Carolina from The State. The articles date from 1977 to 1985.
