Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about education, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Department of Language, Reading, and Exceptionalities was established in 1985 to offer courses in areas such as Reading, Special Education, and Speech Pathology & Audiology. The Department of Language, Reading, and Exceptionalities Records date 1973-1990 and contain mostly administrative materials including faculty meeting minutes, program reviews, correspondence and notes.

The Department of Leadership and Educational Studies was created in 1995 in the Reich College of Education, essentially combining the departments of Leadership and Higher Education with Library Science and Education Foundations, and currently houses four programs – Instructional Technology, Higher Education, Library Science, and School Administration – and offers 12 different graduate degrees in various concentrations. These records contain mostly Library Science program records, but also contain one accession with information on the department as a whole.

This yearbook is the 1941 Eagle from Eagle Rock High School in Eagle Rock, Virginia. The photographs were glued in and are loosening so they were removed to a second folder.

This is a collection of three handwritten record books filled with early American historical facts about presidents, states, especially Virginia and West Virginia, Native Americans, and a myriad of other topics.

The Elizabeth Ann Parks Grinton Papers is a collection of a very active teacher, community leader, volunteer, and mentor of young people, Ms. Grinton of Wilkes County, North Carolina.

5.0 linear feet (8 boxes, 2 half-sized manuscript boxes, 1 box in cold storage)

This collection contains correspondence to Harlan and Bertice Ledford and programs from class reunions of Elizabethton High School members. These papers came out of yearbooks 1942, 1943, 1951, 1957, 1958, and 1959 of that high school.
