Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about education, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Judy Ann Wilson Schoolday Memories Book is a photograph/autograph book of Wilson's fifth grade year in Trade School in the mid-1950s. It contains only a few photographs and one autograph.

The Julian C. Yoder Papers includes materials generated for and by Appalachian State Teachers College professor Julian Yoder.

The Kathryn E. Parke Papers contains collected booklets, brochures, and newsletters from John C. Campbell Folk School, the Highlander Center, Berea College, and other folk schools in the Appalachian region.

Thee collection consists of one document, a broadside which outlines a plan to develop Fountain City near Knoxville, Tennessee, and to establish the Holbrook Normal College under the guidance of "Prof. Holbrook" in Fountain City.

The Ku Klux Klan Papers contains examples of the Klan's members' Commission Credentials, informational pamphlets, and a restricted student paper for Dr. Lorin Baumhover's course in 1968, all of which may contain offensive material and language.

Upward Bound provides academic support to high school students so they may complete high school, enroll in college, and successfully obtain a college degree. The Learning Assistance Program (LAP) provides integrated services fostering the personal development and academic growth of general and specific student populations at Appalachian. The Records of the Learning Assistance Program/Upward Bound contain some grant files, and mostly administrative and program files, dating 1972-2003.
