Manuscript Collections

The diary of Margaret Coolidge detailing life at the Pine Mountain Settlement School from 1922-1925. Coolidge captures life in the Kentucky mountains with anecdotes of dance parties, picnic outings, and walks through the mountains. Particular attention is paid to folklore and colloquialisms from the area. Earlier entries in the diary are from 1913 and focus on a trip to England.

Dr. Margaret McFadden was professor of Women's Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies at Appalachian State University, 1975-2009, and for a time, was chair of the Department of Women's Studies. These records contain McFadden's papers relating to her career as professor and chairperson, and date 1910-2009.

This one paged speech provides brief insight into the graduating class' activities and number of Massanutten Academy, a private male military boarding school located in Woodstock, Virginia.

Established in 1976, The National Center for Developmental Education (NCDE) provides instruction, training programs, research, and other services consistent with the purpose of developmental education and the missions of Appalachian State University and the Reich College of Education. The National Center for Developmental Education (NCDE) Records contain mostly correspondence and administrative files pertaining to NCDE and the Kellogg Institute, as well as several media collections including video from educational programs.
