Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources for genealogy, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The "Watauga County Times...Past" Records is a collection of materials generated by members and contributors of the Watauga County Historical Society. This collection contains incomplete issues of the "Watauga County Times...Past" publication, duplicated and original photographs used and not used for the journal as well as additional information to Watauga County history and Watauga County Historical Society's organizational history.

This collection includes records for the Appalachian Oral History Project, a combined effort of Appalachian State University, Alice Lloyd College, Emory and Henry College, and Lees Junior College to document oral histories of the history and folklore of the central Appalachian region. Materials in this collection consist of interviews and records generated by Appalachian State University interviewers between 1973 and 1975. Records include audio interviews, administrative files, photographs, and video.

The Blackburn Farms Collection is a collection of family mementos, quilts, photographs, correspondence, financial papers, books of art and history, family Bibles, phonograph recordings, and other materials. The Blackburn family lived in Ashe County, North Carolina.

This collection contains students' oral history interviews, notes, final reports and other papers and audiovisual materials relating to the Blue Ridge Parkway/Basin Cove/Moses Cone Oral History Project, originating in the Department of History at Appalachian State University, circa 1975.

The Brazillar and Sallie Davis Family Bible is the family Bible of Brazillar and Sallie Proffitt Davis of Watauga County, North Carolina. The Davises married in 1887. The bible contains records of their family members' births, deaths, and marriages dating from 1868 to 1961.

Brief Account of the Kents of Wytheville, and the County and the Houses They Built consist of thirteen pages of Kent family genealogical and primary resources.

The records of the Center for Appalachian Studies, located at Appalachian State University, gives some history of the Center, its functions, its projects, and key people in its operations. The Center's records gives evidence of the activities that seek to encourage to study and invest in the region and its social, economic, and cultural development.
