Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources for genealogy, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Holsclaw Family History Records consist of copies and translations of a Holsclaw family Bible genealogy records which came to Steve Holsclaw in 2009, and he allowed copies to be made for research.

This collection consists of a wedding invitation from General and Mrs. John Echols to attend the wedding of their daughter Harriette to M. (Michael) Erskine Miller on December 15, 1870. The accompanying envelope is addressed to Mr. B.G. Dunlot and Family of Union, West Virginia.

The John Gwinn Papers is a collection of receipts, loan notes, purchase lists, land deals, deeds, and lawsuits, and estate papers, dating 1866-1868. John Gwinn was a Justice of the Peace in Greenbrier County, West Virginia.

The John Lair Rockcastle Recollection and Other Papers is a collection of research into Rockcastle County, Kentucky families' histories, most of the copied pages and notes bearing the name Jess D. Wilson as author/researcher.

This collection is a photocopied journal of one man's tour of duty in France in World War I. In it, Joseph Gordon Greenwood briefly descriibes his daily life for almost a year during the war.

The Newspaper Clippings Scrapbook of Lucy W. Craig is filled with clippings on various topics of the 1950's mostly from West Virginia newspapers. A few pages in the back are copies of loose clippings.
