Local History


This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources relating to local history in Watauga County and surrounding counties (Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, and Wilkes). Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Monroe Thomas Collection includes photocopied documents sent to Cratis Williams and Carl Ross about Monroe Thomas as well as materials generated from the play, "The Gentle Giant of Kona: A Story of Monroe Thomas," in which the two men participated in group discussions.

This collection consists of the transcription of the spoken part of a Live Concert of Dock Boggs at Appalachian State University on November 17, 1977. The originial recording is not a part of this collection.

This is a collection of informational materials on the Northwest North Carolina Development Association and entry forms for its recognition program. One undated form also is asking for community input on the proposed direction for the Association.

This collection contains the students' research, interviews, and pictures captured on CD, DVD, or miniDV and some on paper. The project was an assignment in the Anthropology 4210 class in 2008.

The Patricia Duane Beaver Papers contain a wealth of information about the conferences she attended, research on Appalachia, some family and personal mementos of travels as well as books, journals and oral histories relating to Appalachian Studies.

The Sketches of Early Watauga collection contains 20 original sketches by Dr. Margaret 'Peggy' Polson of Watauga County, North Carolina. The sketches depict early homes, businesses, and scenes, all dated 1972 and published in 1973.

This collection includes one black and white photograph of an unidentified man. This photograph was originally found in the W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection book, First Valle Crucis: Seventh-day Adventist Church and Church School and other mountain stories.
