Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources relating to local history in Watauga County and surrounding counties (Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, and Wilkes). Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Stanbery/Stanberry-Younce Families Ancestral Charts and Papers consist of ancestral charts of families' genealogies from Watauga County, North Carolina, prepared circa 2002 by Anita Stanberry St. Lawrence and other family members.

While the Student Government at Appalachian State University dates back to 1939, the current Student Government Association was established in 1967 with the purpose communicating the concerns of students to the university administration and to promote the general welfare of the student body. The Student Government Association Records contain meeting agendas, governing constitution and activity materials, operating documents, VHS tapes, office files belonging to branches and groups of committees and councils, including memorabilia items within the election and campaign materials.

The Taylor and Mast General Store (Valle Crucis, North Carolina) Books of Receipts collection contains one large scrapbook-type collection of 1906 receipts from the Taylor and Mast General Store of Watauga County, North Carolina, pasted into a 1904 Star Tailoring catalog, and a receipt book with copies of handwritten receipts, dated 1928. These ledgers show the purchases of a rural general store in the early twentieth century.

The Taylor and Moore Ledger documents the sales of the Taylor and Moore General Store of Valle Crucis, in Watauga County, North Carolina, during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras.

The Teresa Branch Papers consists of Teresa Branch's journal from History 5208, Seminar in Appalachian History in Fall 1985. This journal includes photocopied articles about the Appalachian Region and Branch's reviews of them. This collection primarily contains magazine articles about Watauga County, North Carolina from The State. The articles date from 1977 to 1985.

The Thomas Burton and Ambrose Manning Research Inventory is a list of videocassettes and audiocassettes found in East Tennessee State University's Oral History Collection. This list includes the person recorded, location, and content. This collection does not include the videotapes, audio cassettes or transcriptions of either.

The Thomas Lenoir Papers contains photocopies of correspondence, a diary, and other papers relating to Thomas I. Lenoir. Lenoir served in the Company F of the 25th Regiment of the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1862 as Company Captain.
