Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources relating to local history in Watauga County and surrounding counties (Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, and Wilkes). Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Bertram Adams Papers are photocopies of the Descendants of John Adams of Cove Creek, North Carolina, books 4, 11, 12, and 13 by Bertram Adams and photocopies of various genealogical materials for the Adams family, primarily in Watauga County, North Carolina. Though undated, the materials cover a period of time from circa 1760 to circa 1950.

This collection contains some correspondence from Betty McFarland, black & white photographs, original and copies from books/newspapers with some historic information, and several historic clippings on Boone, North Carolina and area landmarks, buildings, and people.

Bingham Family Papers relates to the family of Joseph Terry Bingham of the Pine Run area of Watauga County, North Carolina. The documents primarily consist of deeds and also include accounts, letters, and Joseph Bingham's commission to as a postmaster. Some materials were generated by Bingham's father-in-law David Lewis.

Blowing Rock Historical Society Records consist of interviews of residents of the long-standing tourist town Blowing Rock, North Carolina. The Blowing Rock Historical Society regularly conducts regular oral history interviews of Blowing Rock citizens. Subjects vary from growing up during the 1940s through 1970s, architecture, various church histories, bohemian culture, businesses, and family histories.

This Blue Ridge Community Theatre Papers includes programs, fliers, banners, clippings, and a script concerning some of the company's productions as well as business papers, grant information, membership lists and correspondence necessary in producing these programs, dating 1983 to 2002.

The Blue Ridge Garden Club Records includes newspaper articles, scrapbooks, minutes, and treasurer and secretary papers from the Blue Ridge Garden Club. This collection showcases Watauga County, North Carolina's first organized garden club and its activities. Originally an exclusive group, the Blue Ridge Garden Club was active in Beautification Projects and coordinating a junior club. One of their main projects was the creation of the Daniel Boone Garden in 1961. The project books and club scrapbooks contain many photographs from the 1950s through the 1990s and illustrates the development of the town of Boone, North Carolina.
