Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources that include maps, primarily of the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Globe (North Carolina) Photographic Map contains two handdrawn maps and six Polaroid photographs of landmarks from the Globe Community in Caldwell County, North Carolina.

The J.W. Shelbourne Farm Map is a 26" x 30" polished linen map of J.W. Shelburne's farm in Montgomery County, Virginia, dated 1926.

The Jack Grayson Farm Survey is a 23 x 20" survey of the Jack Grayson farm of Bland County, Virginia. This map is an example of early nineteenth century surveying and provides information about land ownership.

Kawana Maps is a collection of two handwritten maps of the Kawana area by Ruby Lanier's undergraduate student Mike Clark. This collection provides insight into the land ownership of the Kawana community, located in Avery County, North Carolina, former Caldwell County.

L. H. Cook Farm Map is a 17" x 26 1/2" blueprint map of L.H. Cook's farm in Buchanan District of Botetourt County, Virginia.
