Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about oral history, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

Dr. Carrol Waymon Interview consists of a compact disc recording of an interview with Dr. Carrol Waymon on National Public Radio station WNCW. This interview covers the childhood and music career of his sister, singer Nina Simone.

This collection is a recorded lecture of Dr. Pieter Barkhuizen, an Adventist evangelist, on the subject of What about the Future? a panoramic overview of kingdoms come and gone, given in Louisville, Kentucky, date unknown.

The Elk Knob Community Heritage Organization (EKCHO) Portrait Stories collection contains color copies of twelve handwritten, autobiographical stories with hand-drawn portraits of Elk Knob Community (North Carolina) residents, and copies of them on CD.

The Frank Adams Interviews with Guy and Candie Carawan collection includes audiocassettes, floppy disks, and paper transcripts of 2001-2002 interviews of the Carawans by Frank Adams in Asheville, North Carolina. There is also an interview of Myles Horton by Guy Carawan.

Harold Warren Manuscript contains the draft and manuscript of "A Right Good People..." by Warren. Warren based "A Right Good People..." on interviews of residents of northwestern North Carolina.

The Hasil Adkins Papers and Music collection contains printed interviews, photographs, discography, and recorded music of Hasil Adkins, the Wild Man from West Virginia, dated 1955-1996.

The I. Harding Hughes, Jr., Papers document community life in twentieth century Valle Crucis, a small community in Watauga County, North Carolina. The collection consists of 46 oral history interviews recorded on 41 audiocassettes, research notes, news clippings and other materials Hughes used in the creation of his two books, Valle Crucis: A History of an Uncommon Place and  My Valle Crucis: The Thirties.
