Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about oral history, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

This collection contains Profile Information on Pike County, Kentucky, and several interviews concerning the housing situation after the 1977 floods in the area. Interviews were with local people and administrators of HUD, disaster and emergency services, and development corporations.

The Richard Humphrey Audiocassettes and Transcriptions includes audiocassettes of a lecture Humphrey gave to Carl Ross' history course in 1988 along with its transcriptions, typed and in longhand. The collection also contains an audiocassette of Cratis Williams' Memorial Service and a cassette of Pat Morgan.

The Roger Howell Memory Collection is made up of thirteen original CD recordings made by Roger Howell along with his biography and detailed list of the songs recorded in 2007.

This collection features CDs and VHS tapes of Ronnie Hicks of Watauga County, North Carolina, a bluegrass and gospel musician, who was a member of the Cove Creek Ramblers and a faithful volunteer with the Project on Aging for 39 years.

This collection includes photocopies from the Harper Papers of the Southern Historical Collection, one audiocassette of an 1987 interview with Margaret Harper, and correspondence/articles regarding the history and genealogy of the Harper-Rankin family.

This collection consists of two original audio cassettes and the transcription of them, along with a user and an archival CD copy of the cassettes. They are entitled "Ruth Edmisten Lentz on Appalachian Training School" May 9, 1996 and "Ruth Edna Edmisten Lentz Interview" June 14, 1996. The interviews are between Ralph Lentz II and his grandmother, Ruth Edmisten Lentz.
