Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about oral history, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

This collection includes a typed letter dated 2008 from Vana J. Plaisance regarding her grandfather, Patrick Martin Williams, Jr. A color photograph is also contains a color photograph of Plaisance at the 2008 National Convention of the American Folklore Society in Louisville, Kentucky.

Vardy Valley Oral History Project Records contains "The Vardy Valley Oral History Project, And Other Research and Works" by Theresa Burchett for a Master's internship and the Vardy Historical Society. Vardy Historical Society consists of Melungeon residents of the Vardy Valley, near Sneedville, Tennessee who have worked to preserve the one-room Vardy schoolhouse, oral histories, photographs and other memorabilia.

This collection contains the original manuscript of Wade Edwards Brown's book, Recollections and Reflections, published in 1997, along with eight mini-cassettes from which the book is based.

The Wiley Smith Harmon Papers is made up of eleven reel-to-reel tapes and their transcriptions of Smith Harmon of Cove Creek, Watauga County, North Carolina, relating his life history and remembrances and of the Harmon family, covering the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

This collection consists of the student papers written for the folklore classes of William "Bill" Lightfoot, retired English professor at Appalachian State University, as well as audiocassettes of the student interviews.
