Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about organizations, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

This collection consists of a 1984 seven-inch ribbon printed with Bluefield Democratic Club, 1894.

The Carl Ross Papers is a collection of Carl Ross' academic research and students papers, predominantly from his classes on Appalachian Culture and History. The collection includes extensive materials on the history and architecture of the Brinegar Cabin located on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are also a number of materials related to Dr. Ross' passion for the Civil War and living history programs. A bulk of the collection is centered around Ross' interest in Appalachian Studies and his work in documenting the history of the region.

The Celo Community Collection consist of 4 items about the intentional community located in the Black Mountains of Yancey County, North Carolina.  These documents detail the origins of the Celo Community from its residents' perspective during the 1950s and the 1960s.

The Edna H. Miller Winston-Salem Presbytery Church Work Papers gives a glimpse of the years Ms. Miller was President of this organization, her Bible study notes, meeting minutes, expenses, and other information between 1963 and 1969.

The Green Valley Community Park, Inc. Records is a collection of the records, permits, events, photographs, fund-raising, and community involvement that made the park a reality, dating 1985-2013.

The Highlander Center Records contains information about the Highlander Research and Education Center in New Market, Tennessee as well as materials related to the Appalachian region, mostly gathered for a land study in the early 1980s. Also included are articles, papers, legislation information, and other materials about coal mining and other natural resource utilization and abuse.

This collection is a single program for an undated Grand Concert for Knights of Pythias, probably in Roanoke, Virginia. It has been folded many times and is very fragile.
