Overview

This guide includes secondary source resources about photographs, primarily in the Appalachian region, and manuscript collections (primary sources) that include photographs. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

"Summer on Winsome Mountain" consists of one color 14" x 11" photograph titled "Summer on Winsome Mountain." The mountain range shown has been identified as Snake Mountain on the North Carolina-Tennessee border looking North. The Peak is at the left center and tree Top is right of center.

This collection gives a glimpse into the life history of A.B. (Alexander Boyd) Andrews and of the Romulus Saunders locomotive and contains several items relating to A.B. Andrews of Cherokee County, North Carolina.

The Aldridge Family Photograph consists of a photograph of the Aldridge family of Watauga County, North Carolina. The photograph likely dates to the early 1890s. This photograph illustrates the family relationships and fashion of late nineteenth century Watauga County, North Carolina.

The collection contains information from the Alnwick Bedspreads company, including correspondence, magazine articles, ephemera, and photographs.

Alvin Dudley Tipton World War II Photographs and Papers consists of photographs, governmental documents, newspaper and magazine articles documenting the World War II service of Alvin Dudley Tipton.

Annabel Harrill Papers consist of papers, photographs collected during study on Ashe County, North Carolina mills. Many mills were located in the South Fork of the New River area. Also included are newspaper clippings and a ballad about Laura Foster, a Wilkes County, North Carolina native who was murdered in the 1860s.

Appalachia Photographs contain print photographs and negatives of the Appalachian region, mostly Northwestern North Carolina, but also some parts of Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. It contains photographs, slides, and negatives. Images include Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, and Watauga Counties, Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, and unidentified images of towns, people, and museum exhibits.
