Overview

This guide includes secondary source resources about photographs, primarily in the Appalachian region, and manuscript collections (primary sources) that include photographs. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The collection contains twenty 8" x 10" or 8" x 12" color photographs of rural Appalachian settings, primarily from Virginia. Each photograph is mounted to a 11" x 14" mat.

This collection, the William Stewart Scott Papers, includes the photographs and memoirs of Stewart Scott, a West Jefferson, North Carolina resident. Mr. Scott was born near Mill Creek in Ashe County, NC, and spent much of his life in Ashe County. He began taking photographs when he returned from World War II, and continued for over 40 years until his death in 2004. The collection contains family photographs, landscapes, and photographs of flora and fauna in the Ashe County area.

This collection is of one black and white photo/postcard sent to Miss Katherine Carpenter, Mt. Jackson, Virginia, September 24, 1941 and signed Willie Coleman.
