Overview

This guide includes secondary source resources about photographs, primarily in the Appalachian region, and manuscript collections (primary sources) that include photographs. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

Materials in the Cratis D. Williams Papers cover the professional and private life of scholar and professor Cratis Williams, his studies in Appalachian literature, folklore and ballads, and the Appalachian Consoritum. The collection consists of materials related to Williams' work at Appalachian State University, academic and genealogical research, correspondence, photographs, audio recordings of folksongs and lectures, one VHS tape, two reels of microfilm, slides, and family memorabilia.

CSX Transportation Calendars includes seven 22" x 34" calendars dating from 1987 to 1993. This collection provides insight into the merchandising practices of the CSX Transportation Railway.

The CSX-Chessie-Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad-Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Collection contains CSX-Chessie-Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad-Baltimore and Ohio Railroad memorabilia and original documents about the railroads. Many documents are related to Yardmaster W.J. Weisgerber's appeal to his 15 day suspension for damage to Volkswagen automobiles.

The Dauphin Disco Dougherty Papers is a small collection of personal items belonging to D.D. and his family, including two poetry books from 1923, his wife Lillie's autograph book from 1889-1897, and a black and white photo of his parents, Daniel Baker Dougherty and Elen Caroline Bartlett Dougherty.

The David Isaacs Yesterday's Harvest Digital Scrapbook collection is one CD and an archival CD copy of black and white and color scanned photographs compiled by David Isaacs with some explanatory text intermingled, photographs dating back to the 1960's.

The David Worth Papers includes photographs, letters, newspaper articles, maps, and journal articles about the David Worth family and Creston located in Ashe County, North Carolina. The Worth family were merchants living in western Ashe County, North Carolina.

The Debra B. McMillan Papers consist mostly of correspondence about Debra B. McMillan's book about Fairmont, her research for an alumnus on his family and early Fairmont, and a couple of pictures of early Fairmont and its architecture.
