Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about railroads, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

This collection consists of a letter from James T. Williams, Jr. to Mrs. L. Kemp, dated July 8, 1937, concerning scheduling a concert of the Norfolk & Western Male Chorus in Abingdon, Virginia. Also included is a copy of newspaper article Dated April 19, 1939 advertising the chorus's concert in Roanoke, Virginia.

Norfolk and Western Railway Blueprints and Records include reports from the railway about construction, upgrades, and legal disputes; blueprints; individual and business receipts and invoices; and correspondence.

This collection is a regulations booklet for the Pennsylvania Railroad Voluntary Relief Department with a Membership Certificate inside front cover to John M. Eyler, dated July 1, 1911. A Stamp in bottom left-hand corner says he began membership with the relief fund April 14, 1904.
