Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about railroads, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Photograph of John Riddle's Children Standing on Tweetsie Engine is a black and white 13 x 20 photo on cardstock of two girls standing on the engine of Tweetsie Railway, in either Boone or Linville, North Carolina.

The Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway Company Maps and Papers collection contains blue prints, legal papers, and Interstate Commerce Commission documents about the construction of the Connellsville extension of its line of railroad.

This collection includes a large number of maps and drawings related to railroad infrastructure, trackage rights, industrial sites, and commercial development for numerous railways and companies that operated in the mid atlantic and southern regions.

Randolph Avenue Overhead (Elkins, WV) Blueprints consist of sixteen 24" x 36" blueprint sheets for the Randolph Avenue Overhead on US 250 and 219 about the Western Maryland Railway in Elkins, West Virginia. This collection illustrates the engineering practices of 1930s West Virginia. Six blueprints show span details, three show pier details while seven show pilings, girders and general plan.

This collection of railroad news and memorabilia contains some of Randy Stevens' personal railroad collection, including the whole run of The Blue Ridge Stemwinder and eleven volumes of the newsletter,  The ET Times.

Reed Island Iron Company Records consists of business ledgers and sales receipts of the Reed Island Iron Company, located in Reed Island, a Pulaski County village on the Norfolk and Western Railway.

Seniority of Roanoke Shop Employees Covered by the Mechanical Department Association Agreement is a bound book with a list of boilermaker's seniority roster in the Norfolk and Western Railway boilermaker shop of Roanoke, Virginia.  This collection illustrates unionizing in Appalachian Virginia within the Norfolk and Western Railway Company boilermakers.
