Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about railroads, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Virginia Blue Ridge Railroad Photograph is a 16 1/2" x 11" oil painting of the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway, circa 1920. It is described as a geered logging engine. Artist is unknown.

The Western North Carolina Railroad Pamphlets and Map Collection contains nine nineteenth century pamphlets and one handcolored map related to railroads in North Carolina, dating 1856-1871. They are bound in a leather book. The Western North Carolina Railroad Pamphlets and Map Collection contains materials related to the operation of several North Carolina rail road companies, including the Western North Carolina Rail Road Company, the Greenville and French Board Rail Road Company, and the Cincinnati, Cumberland Gap and Charleston Railroad.
