War

Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about war, including the Revolutionary War, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War.  For information about the American Civil War, see the guide on the Civil War.  Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. Manuscript Collections

The Rufus Burks Papers collection contains about 100 letters from and to Rufus Burks and family members while he was serving in the US Army. Other folders contain family tax receipts and other receipts and paper pertaining to life in the 1940's.

This collection is two letters from N.D. Ward, one addressed to Becky and Samuel and dated December 12, 1966. The other has no date or saluation, but its first sentence leads one to believe it is to Becky and Samuel, regarding their common ancestors and neighbors.

Samuel Horton Collection consists of Horton's photocopied high school and college documents, and correspondence from school and military life.  This collection illustrates the experiences of a Watauga County, North Carolina native with both local and Piedmont education and military life.

The Sergeant John Champe Prints consists of two prints of John Champe, a Revolutionary War spy against Benedict Arnold. He was originally from Loudoun County, Virginia.

This collection consists of World War II letters mostly from Private Terah (Terrah) Harris to his wife Clara. [Terah spelled his name both ways in signatures.] There are a few diaries of Clara's before she married him, and a Lutheran serviceman's book.

The Thomas Lenoir Papers contains photocopies of correspondence, a diary, and other papers relating to Thomas I. Lenoir. Lenoir served in the Company F of the 25th Regiment of the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1862 as Company Captain.

The Thorton T. Perry Papers consists of mostly correspondence and bills to Thorton and his family members. The collection also includes photographs, Christmas cards, and postcards.
