This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about music, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

The Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame Collection consists of the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame 2008 information packet and related contact letter for the first annual celebration of inductees.

The Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame was designed in 2008 to honor musicians in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is also intended to strengthen music tourism and education in Wilkes County and the greater Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Bobby McMillon Collection consists of duplicates of Bobby McMillon's recordings of ballad performances found in the Bobby McMillon Collection (#20007), Southern Folklife Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Boyden Carpenter Photograph is a photograph of Boyden Carpenter with his guitar and a "The 'Hill Billy' from Alleghany County" guitar case.

Materials in the Camp Catawba and Vera Lachmann Papers cover the operation of a summer camp for boys from 1944 to 1970. Also featured are materials related to the camp's founder Vera Lachmann, a poet and educator of German-Jewish background who sought refuge in the United States at the beginning of World War II. The collection contains information on Camp Catawba's history, correspondence with campers and counselors, poetry composed by Lachmann, Lachmann's personal correspondence, and ephemera and sound recordings from Camp Catawba.

The Carlton and Charles Haney Papers contain materials related to the personal and professional life of Bluegrass and Country music promoter Carlton Haney. Included within the collection are personal papers, financial records, materials on the production and publicity of music festivals, contracts with performers, and publicity photographs of various Bluegrass and Country music entertainers. The papers contain financial, editorial, and subscription information about music publications published by Haney, including Muleskinner News, Grassound, and Music Country. Also included are reel-to-reel recordings of festivals produced by Haney in North Carolina and Virginia.

This collection houses various drafts with edit notes from Cecelia Conway's Colonializing Appalachian (or Slashing the Homemade Quilt) in Denise Giardina's 'Storming Heaven', written in the mid to late 1990's, and videos of Ora Watson's performances of Appalachian mountain music in 1992.

This collection is a copy of a presentation by Charles Isley to the Appalachian State University Torch Club on July 14, 2008 entitled "Shape Note Singing in America", along with a biographical sketch of Isley.
