Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about national parks, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

Ralph Fickel was a rock and ice climber in North Carolina who attended Appalachian State University and served as a guide and teacher to beginner and more advanced climbers. His papers include his climbing journals, notes, and hand-drawn notes as well as correspondence, equipment catalogs, and organizational brochures. His interests in climbing, geography, and military history are represented in this collection.

This collection contains a letter to John Mason Clarke of the National Association, Washington DC from the Chairman of the Smoky Mountain Forest Reserve Association in Knoxville, Tennessee, dated June 23, 1934.

The Virginia Cascade Stereograph is a 3.5" x 7" stereoscopic photograph intended for use with a stereoscope or stereo card viewer. This image depicts two men standing on rocks in a pool at the bottom of a waterfall in Yellowstone National Park. The caption "Virginia Cascades" appears beneath the image on the right.
