This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about politics and government, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

This small collection is a three-page of an editorial entitled "Plain Thoughts for the West", regarding the North Carolina gubernatorial race between William A. Graham and Michael Hoke in 1844.

"Politics Pays" Collection contains faxed photocopies of newspaper clippings about plays by Lenoir Rhyne College students. Included is "Politics Pays", a play by Theodosia Watson. "Politics Pays" was by Theodosia Watson, a native of Watauga County, North Carolina. It is a love story and illustrates the Appalachian political party machine as Watson viewed it.

The Allegany County, Maryland Court Warrants and Summons collection dates to 1731 and 1797. Court summons and warrants for persons such as William and Elizabeth Koilie, Robert Brett, John Taylor, and others are included.

Appalachian Education and Politics Bibliography includes a three page undated selective bibliography on books on Appalachian culture, education, and politics. It is not attributed to an author. Books date between 1916 and 1970.

This collection includes records for the Appalachian Oral History Project, a combined effort of Appalachian State University, Alice Lloyd College, Emory and Henry College, and Lees Junior College to document oral histories of the history and folklore of the central Appalachian region. Materials in this collection consist of interviews and records generated by Appalachian State University interviewers between 1973 and 1975. Records include audio interviews, administrative files, photographs, and video.

This collection includes two orders from a Justice of County Court to the Sheriff of Augusta County, Virginia to summons two men to court in March 1856.

This collection consists of a two-page handwritten order to the sheriff of Burke County, North Carolina to seize seventeen slaves of William McKeson, Henry O'Neil, Thomas G. Walton and N.W. Woodfin for payment of a debt of $1848.34 to E.E. Greenlee, dated August 12, 1861. The slaves were seized November 16, 1861.
