Manuscript Collections

James Thomas Broyhill (August 19, 1927- ), a Representative and a Senator from North Carolina. Born in Lenoir, North Carolina to James Edgar and Satie Hunt Broyhill. Elected November 1962 as a Representative to the Eighty-eighth and to the eleven succeeding Congresses. Second longest acting Congressman in the history of North Carolina. Resigned as a Representative July 14, 1986 upon appointment to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John East. Served as State Senator from July 14, 1986 to November 10, 1986. Unsuccessful candidate for election to the Senate seat in 1986. Served as the Secretary, North Carolina Department of Economic and Community.

The John Gaventa Papers consist of the papers and research materials of political sociologist John Gaventa. This includes research materials concerning coal mining in Appalachia and Wales and the economic and environmental effects of mining on these regions as well as materials concerning the American Association Limited and Sir Denys Lowson. It also includes correspondence, journals and calendars, publications and papers written by Gaventa, interview transcripts, photographs, and audiocassette tapes and a VHS tape of speeches given by Gaventa.

The John T. Shepherd Papers contains Shepherd's business and personal papers dating from the early twentieth century.

This collection includes one handwritten court summons for John White and Annanias McCoy, written by Jonesboro Clerk of Court Francis A. Ramsey, and to be delivered to the sheriff Robert Houston of Knox County in the Territory South of the Ohio. The summons was issued September 24, 1792 August 15th, 1792 and calls John White and Annanias McCoy to appear at the courthouse in Jonesboro on February 15, 1793. Also included in this collection are two photocopied typed transcripts of the same letter.

This collection is a docket book and loose records, summons, and receipts of court cases brought before Justice of the Peace John W. Hodges in Watauga County, North Carolina in 1925 and 1926.
