Overview

This guide includes both primary and secondary source resources about politics and government, primarily in the Appalachian region. Manuscripts must be used in the Dougherty Reading Room. To schedule an appointment or for more information, email spcoll@appstate.edu.

Manuscript Collections

This collection consists of seven letters and an envelope from different politicians from North Carolina, kept mainly for their signatures. They date from 1919 to 1974.

Kelly Bennett (1890-1974) was an active civic leader in the Great Smoky Mountains during the mid-Twentieth Century and served as a local and state elected official for Swain County as well as in many civic organizations such as the Cherokee Historical Association, Inc. and the Western North Carolina Associated Communities. The Kelly Bennett Papers consist of personal correspondence and interests, as well as Bennett's work with various organization dedicated to the development of the parks and roadways of western North Carolina and the Cherokee Historical Association.

The Lewis W. Green Books and Papers are the working manuscripts and newspapers of Lewis W. Green, who published small newspapers about political and cultural events in Asheville, North Carolina and surrounding counties. The collection includes working manuscripts with edits, thoughts and ideas, poetry, and almost complete runs of Green's newspapers The Native Stone, Overtones, and The Independent Torch.

The Linville Higgins Letter is a one paged letter written by Linville Higgins of Alleghany County, North Carolina in 1871 to his grandson John Higgins. This collection provides insight into health of elderly people, crops, political opinion during Reconstruction era Appalachian North Carolina.

The Louise Robbins Broyhill Collection contains her speeches from her husband's various campaigns.

This collection of Watauga County, North Carolina deeds, tax receipts, and other materials was collected by Martha O'Neal of Boone, North Carolina.

Mountain State Schools School Building Bonds consist of four 1956 school bonds for Greenbrier County, West Virginia and two checks. These bonds illustrate the desire of Alderson, West Virginia residents to support the improvement of the county's school buildings.
