Scope:
This pathfinder contains materials which provide information on the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the southern Appalachian mountains, 1933-1942. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a federal public work relief program, created as part of the New Deal legislation by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and signed into law on March 31, 1933. At that time, America was in the worst depths of the decade-long Great Depression. Roosevelt intended the CCC to create jobs by training enrollees to help reverse or prevent soil erosion, forest fires, and flooding, as well as to work on reforestation and trail, road, and bridge building project in state and national parks. Selection of recruits for the Civilian Conservation Corps was administered by the Department of Labor. The welfare, training, and discipline of recruits provided for by the Army. All volunteers were drawn from families on poor relief. With the exception of some “veterans’ camps” for veterans of the First World War, and skilled “local experienced men” who were drawn from nearby communities to supervise in skilled tasks, volunteers had to be male and aged 18-25, though there was later an extension for men aged 17-27. CCC Camps sprang up in rural locations all over the country. For many young mountaineers, the CCC was their first paying job, an opportunity to meet others, bolster an education, and perhaps travel.
