Researching folk painting in the Appalachian Region is difficult. Most of the published material is part of the larger subject of folk art and includes sculpture, carving, basketry, and other forms of artistic interpretation. Moreover, the definition of folk art is obscure. Often indexed under other terms, such as outsider art or self-taught artists, information about folk painting appears in bits and pieces--on web sites, in newspaper and magazine articles, or in books about folk art in general. Introductions to the topic can be found in guides for collectors, in museum catalogs, and in books about folk art in the South or folk painting in America, but little has been written about folk painting as a separate art form. This pathfinder will be a guide for the researcher who wants to investigate folk painting and the contribution that it has made to the culture and history of the Appalachian region.
