Grassroots movements occur within a global political economic continuum. Cultural, political, and economic influences determine their occurence. Environmental degradation is often a catalyst for social mobilization. Through the pedagogical process, citizens learn to challenge the power relations which encourage human and natural resource exploitation. Historical, economic, political, and anthropological considerations are therefore relevent to a study of grassroots activism in southern Appalachia (as geographically defined by the ARC). Southern Appalachia is an appropriate source for comparison to other exploited regions.
