Multiple Use Planning and Development Issues of the Blue Ridge Parkway

Scope:

The Blue Ridge Parkway was originally created as a tool for economic aid during the Great Depression era. Construction began in 1935, creating thousands of jobs for the people of the Appalachian region. Since its creation, the Parkway has been the focus of multiple planning issues primarily geared at the aesthetics of the land, development issues, promotion of tourism as an economic tool, cultural/heritage preservation and environmental/ecological concerns. Often times, the various “uses” of the Parkway cause a conflict of priorities for the parties involved in the planning process. The purpose of this Pathfinder is to facilitate research of the multiple uses of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s resources and how these varied planning issues can (or cannot) coexist.
